Active Optical Systems started in 2005 by developing the lowest-cost high-quality deformable mirror on the market. AOS then developed the low-cost wavefront sensor products on the market today by leveraging the advances in USB and FireWire (1394) interface cameras. By combining these technologies AOS developed both conventional wavefront-sensor adaptive optics systems and metric AO systems. The most recent work at AOS has been in demonstrating laser beam shaping systems and more conventional piezoelectric actuator plate-type deformable mirrors that exceed many of the specifications of any other vendor of this technology.
Today, AOS is a one-stop shop for virtually all adaptive optics needs. Mission & Philosophy
At AOS, we believe in the promise of adaptive optics. We are doing more to bring that promise to the market today by fighting the three major barriers to the mass adoption of adaptive optics: cost, complexity, and inertia. We have designed our systems to be low-cost by inventing new ways of creating the traditionally high-cost items like deformable mirrors, wavefront sensors, and drive electronics using low-cost parts, while creating our systems with sufficient flexibility to use a wide range of existing hardware as well. We are building our AO systems and control software to be smart enough that the system designer need not be an AO expert to use them. We are working to show the world the real promise of AO and how incorporating it into many optical systems can actually reduce the cost of bringing these systems to market.
